Can they see it from their house?

I’m into big signs, I like to be able to read them from my house. This is a bit of hyperbole on my part, but seriously, how well can the traffic in front of your store read your sign?

Let me take you back to high school for a bit of pain in a word problem: For every inch in letter height you get 25 ft of distance readability standing still. Let’s say your channel letter sign has 12in letters. If a car driving at 60 miles per hour is driving past your store, how long does the driver have to read your sign once he sees it?

If you can’t determine this answer, you’d better call someone fast because many thousands of dollars may just be driving right on by.

Every driver has a very limited amount of time to read any one thing, usually 2-3 seconds at the most. So what would that tell you about the message of your wall sign or your road sign? You must be very clear, concise and understandable. The people driving by are busy with any number of activities while driving. They will not work at finding your sign. You must make it easy for them.

The Americans with Disabilities Act and what Minnesota business need to know

The Americans with Disabilities Act was put into place concerning signage to help those with low sight or no sight find their way around. Regarding interior door signs, your business may have to comply with this act.

ADA signs doesn’t automatically mean ugly institutional signs. You can add style, design and even color to your interior ADA signs. There are guidelines, but that doesn’t force you to use black and white only.

3. Can people driving by understand the message?

The answers to these questions must be yes for all three. If you have a no on any of them, then immediately upgrade your sign package. If you invest too little in your sign package you WILL invest more in other forms of advertising. Besides, signs are not a huge expense anyways.

The budget for your sign should be in direct proportion to the amount of traffic driving past your business. I will bet that you will be surprised how inexpensive signs really are.

Our weather can be harsh on exterior signage. There is the wind, hail, heat, humidity and one other uh….. Oh! that’s right, COLD! Not just a rosy cheeks cold, but a bitter, freeze your fanny off kinda cold. So how do exterior signs manage in this weather.

Some do better than others. Many of you have experienced a dim neon sign, especially during the cold. There are reasons for this and you need someone to help. The sign industry is changing and adapting every year. We are currently gaining ground on new products that do well in the cold as well as keep the power costs low.

The wind is another big player for our exterior signs. How many times do you want to pick up your sign after a slight Minnesota breeze?
