Should you wait on a sign for your MN business?
Does the current economic crisis scare you into poor business decisions? There is an old axiom in my family that says, “A business with no sign is a sign of no business!” (to you sign guys reading this, I can actually say we said it first, or very nearly) Do you need more business? Do you want more business? Then don’t react to the economy, promote your business.
If you were able to increase your sales just 10% per month, what would that do to your business? You do know that a well designed wall sign or pylon sign can easily draw 10% more customers. Sometimes they bring you all your customers.
Did you know that business in the 1930’s continued to use on site signage? Don’t believe me, here ya go.
Signs are a vital part of the survival for your business. How will people know your in business? Wall signs, vehicle graphics, window lettering and signs by the road all can contribute to your financial health.

Is your Minnesota company invisible? Are you the invisible business?
You are if no one can find you. I’m sure you didn’t move into a high traffic building off one of our many freeways in Minnesota only to become invisible to those cars. Unfortunately, that is exactly what you created when you moved in then neglected the lighted exterior sign.
Now you have to spend thousands of dollars on other types of advertising to get traffic to find you. Have you stopped and asked how many people drive right past your door everyday?
So which type of sign…….
A lighted sign or a non lit sign?
With todays modern lighting signs, we can now make signs that run on very low power. In order to get the maximum effect from your exterior signs, you should have them lighted. This will allow your sign to be effective 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
But, you don’t know how much they cost so…..
You want an inexpensive lighted sign.
Yes, I have a zero cost budget as well. I want to spend the smallest amount of money for a lit sign. Before you determine the cost of the sign consider first a couple of other things.
- Will the lowest price sign be seen from the road?
- Will this lit sign bring me more traffic?
- Can people driving by understand the message?
The answers to these questions must be yes for all three. If you have a no on any of them, then immediately upgrade your sign package. If you invest too little in your sign package you WILL invest more in other forms of advertising. Besides, signs are not a huge expense anyways.
The budget for your sign should be in direct proportion to the amount of traffic driving past your business. I will bet that you will be surprised how inexpensive signs really are.
good signing

Wall signs and pylon signs in Minnesota get a workout.
Our weather can be harsh on exterior signage. There is the wind, hail, heat, humidity and one other uh….. Oh! that’s right, COLD! Not just a rosy cheeks cold, but a bitter, freeze your fanny off kinda cold. So how do exterior signs manage in this weather.
Some do better than others. Many of you have experienced a dim neon sign, especially during the cold. There are reasons for this and you need someone to help. The sign industry is changing and adapting every year. We are currently gaining ground on new products that do well in the cold as well as keep the power costs low.
The wind is another big player for our exterior signs. How many times do you want to pick up your sign after a slight Minnesota breeze? None, come on now, everybody likes it when their sign falls over, right? Of course not. To avoid these tragedies, you really need to have a well trained sign team on your side who knows about keeping the pylon sign standing. In Minnesota, signs get some abuse, but you don’t have to take it.
now get back to work

Signs Signs Signs Everywhere are Signs in Minnesota
Not just a protest song, but a fact. Signs are everywhere. Most of the Twin cities signs I see are very functional, and some of them are down right pointless.
Let’s begin this note with one statement of fact. All business signs either Identify and/or Advertise. Do you agree? What does your business sign do? Does it advertise or identify? Let’s take a look at these two ideas.
Identifying business signs:
In order to be considered Identifying, you should be able to say yes to as many of the questions below as possible.
Wall Signs
- Can it be read from the street?
- Can it be read while driving at the speeds being driven on that street?
- Can it be read at night?
- Can it be read from across the street?
Pylon Signs or Pole signs all of the above plus:
- Can you read it from the nearest intersection?
- Is anything blocking it’s view?
- Can it be easily read in the time it takes to pass it?
Advertising Business signs:
These questions qualify your wall sign or pole sign as advertisement, in addition to answering the above questions.
- When people read it they know immediately what you sell?
When people read it they know immediately what you want to sell?
You see, many business use their sign simply as identification. That’s fine if people already know what it is you sell. If you want the other 99% who don’t know who you are to come in a buy from you, you may want to change your sign over to advertisement. As an example, I have a client with a restaurant. Everyone knows that he is a restaurant, but nobody knows that it has a BUFFET!
Instead of a wall sign that says “Johnson, Smith & Jones”, which can be big and beautiful, why not “ACCOUNTANT” which immediately tells everyone your an accounting firm. Instead of some name that means so much to you, why not a picture name that means something to everyone else?
Do you need someone to give you a free evaluation on you current sign? Could your business sign be doing more? If so, just give this sign guy a call.
Good signing

If you are looking for an inexpensive sign for your dry cleaning business, then I have a great offer. My Minnesota sign company recently came into possession of a brand new “cleaners” set of channel letters on a raceway. It is lit with internal red LED lighting, & white acrylic faces.
This wall sign is the deal of a lifetime if you live in or around the Minneapolis, St. Paul area. We can also provide installation for this sign at your Twin Cities location.
They are 18″ block channel letters.

That is a very loaded question, and all humor aside, I get this question frequently. In the sign world, size DOES matter.
Let me tell you a story:
I recently left Minnesota, the land of endless winter for San Diego forĀ a little r&r. Nearly everywhere I went, I struggled to find places that I was trying to go. Now ladies, no jokes about men and taking short cuts. The problem was that many of the wall signs and even pylon signs were just too small. What ended up happening was that I made many more U-Turns than usual.
In the real world however, people won’t typically make U-Turns. They simply will drive to the next one and hopefully see it’s sign in enough time to pull off the road. One hotel chain did some research to find out why they had so many cancellation. What they found was that many missed the hotels exit and simply drove to the next hotel, canceling their other reservation.
So, the real question is, Does SIGN size matter. Absolutely! One more thing. Why would you spend or rather save a few hundred bucks only to have too small of a sign?
The best way to get a client into your door, is when they are driving right in front of it.
Good signing

Today I’m going to talk you through making your own business signs, or banners for you company. If you live in or near Minneapolis, call me and I can tell you in person. In these economic times, people are trying to save a few bucks. I get it, we are too. So below is a step by step process for making your own sign.
Step 1 – Call around to find the right kind of banner or sign material
Step 2 – settle for whatever material you find because you still don’t want to pay the price for quality sign material
Step 3 – Find some paint, or paint markers to letter the banner or plywood.
Step 4 – Paint the lettering on your banner or sign
Step 5 – go back to step 2 and start over because you realize you can’t spell, or you spilled your paint
Step 6 – Tell yourself that it looks fine. (squinting will help, also leaning to one side if the lettering isn’t straight)
Step 7 – Hang your new sign in front of your business. Your potential clients can now see what you think about quality
Step 8 – Go rehang your sign because it blew down.
Step 9 – Tell yourself it looks fine. (stand real far away, like across town, it always looks good from there)
total cost unable to compute because you probably don’t know how much money stayed in your customers pocket when they drove by shaking their heads.
The above steps are just a glimpse at what you must do in order to make your own sign or banner. You still have to have the right message, consider the size of the lettering, and spend tons of time trying to figure out how to not make it look as stupid as it really is.
How to make money for your Minnesota Twin cities company
A good sign guy can actually save you money with your sign, and still get you a nice banner or sign. Just say you don’t have a lot of money. We understand and will stear you to something that will fit your budget. Just remember, a good looking sign is designed to attract business, not make them laugh.

Thanks to my cousin Mike in Colorado sending these pics to me. He runs Platinum signs in Grand Junction and is working on a new web site.
When you are looking to grow your business, choose a sign company that has 4 generations of sign men to call upon. Our family began in north Florida hand lettering signs. Today, we use the latest computer technology for all types of signs. Banners, channel letters, vehicle lettering, Electronic message centers, trade show signs……
From humble beginnings in Florida, our family now spans the United States. Florida, Colorado, Washington and also the midwest with my company near Minneapolis, MN.

We can make a green sign for you.
It can be green in color,
It can be green for the environment with our LED technology,
It can also bring you more GREEN $$$!
In this tough Minnesota market, we need all the help we can get. A well placed sign can bring you more money. How? If your potential clients who drive by you everyday can see your wall sign, pylon sign or channel letters, then they will stop and buy. When they buy, you make money. It’s like your wall sign makes money for you!
Wall signs work in Minneapolis, Ramsey and all around the Twin cities.
Lit Signs work for your business 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. If you don’t have a sign on your business telling people what you sell, you will not be in business for long.
Let’s do the math. Take what you are getting now, and let us say that your sign brings you 10% more business. (the statistics say you will get much more) What would be your ROI, return on investment? Even the small business administration says to put up a sign. I say, put up a clear well designed sign.
